Thoughts from Pastor Burke

A FEW RANDOM THOUGHTS…

….our school began without too much of a fuss.  As always the first few days saw drop-off and pick-up issues but that is solved now.  Thanks to: Chris Burke for “hooking-up” all the computers – glad to have that job done; Beth Bourgeois for helping computerize many of the forms and attendance records we are required to complete; Mike Welch and Craig Brister for picking-up and delivering text books; Todd Sauer leveled the parking lot – so the pot-holes are gone….until the next rain; Earl Marquardt for building our new swings on the playground; and, of course, to Ursula Hudson and Jeannie Brister for assuming the duties of principal – a big job to say the least and they have certainly stepped-up-to-the-plate.  Our teachers and staff are unquestionably doing a “jam-up” job, so “thank you” to Hope, Christiana, Kendra, Sue, Debbie, Ursula, Jeannie, Pat, Donna, and our parents who give of their time to help in the classroom and with lunch duties.  As it turns out we still have room for additional students in most grades…so if you know of someone seeking a great school please refer Lafayette Lutheran School.

FLC welcomed the LLS students and parents for lunch at the August Covered Dish.  A number of LLS’ers worshiped with us and others came after attending their own church to enjoy the noon meal.  It was great to meet, greet, and welcome each visitor.  We all look forward to their next visit, of course, please know LLS students and parents are always welcomed.  Thanks to all who participated and supported this event….it was great!

Mother’s Day Out is off to a good start as well.  Sara Gallineau is our director.  We are blessed that our MDO is not simply a babysitting service – we actually teach the older children.  Thanks to all our MDO teachers – Cori, Kathy, Kelly, Kim, Lori, Sandra

Sunday Church School has begun the fall term.  Thanks to our “summer teachers” – Salina Botteron, Barry Gidman, John Dankert – “y’all done good!”

The fall term teachers are: Kristen Bagby & Jessica Leger, Nursery–3yrs.; Shelly Brumbaugh & Elizabeth Diebold, pre-K-1st grade; Barbara Schmidt, Sharon Banchbach, Katy Wood, Linda Fox (sub.), 2nd-4th; Salina Botteron, Carla Nobles, Lauri Sauer, 5th-8th; John Dankert, High School; Kathy Crowley & Beth Bourgeois, substitutes; pastor, adults.  Jodi Franklin and Mary Kinler are co-superintendents.  As you can see we have classes for everyone ---- so make plans to join us each Sunday.

It was our honor and privilege to baptize Cale Aiden Perkins on August 23rd.  Cale is the infant son of Jason and Nicole Perkins.  His sponsors are Eric Bue and Leslie Goodwin.

Our deepest condolences are extended to Norris and Shirley Gwin at the death of Shirely’s mother, Margaret Wendelkin and to Debbie Collins, Carolyn Ruth Hebert and their families at the death of their mother, Flo Ware.  Please remember these families in your prayers during this difficult time.

Camille Thompson is at Camelot Place Assisted Living in Broussard...stop by for a visit.  Woody Williams is at home and is doing well.  Ede Dupre is home dealing with some health issues – give her a call.  Freda Crisler was hospitalized and is home – please remember her in your prayers, give her a call.  Bob Pillion had surgery and is home recuperating under Arla’s watchful eye.  Sarah Warren has been in Lafayette General Hospital for surgery – she is home but please remember her in your prayers.  Estelle Rietschel was hospitalized and is at St. Agnes Nursing Home in Breaux Bridge...please keep Estelle and Fred in your prayers.  Brenda Nettles was hospitalized and now home – remember her in your prayers.

Lafayette Consolidated Government continues work on the proposed road across our property.  The details of the project are still under consideration…it will happen….the rumor is by the end of 2010.  We shall see.

Just a reminder for everyone concerning building usage, please schedule events with Michelle Davis, church secretary.  (Yes, I am still trying to locate my white and purple stoles…)  We have many groups using the facility so it is important to do this.  And remember to clean-up after your event, turn off lights and air conditioners, and lock all doors.

As part of our 2009 benevolence FLC has paid the tuition for a seminarian student at Wartburg Seminary.  The student receiving our help is a married second career senior with two children (9 & 7 years old).  A letter acknowledging FLC’s gift is posted in the narthex.  We plan to make this an ongoing practice therefore the budget proposed for 2010 will reflect this desire.

Sydney and Noah Sauer have been at it again…mowing the lawn.  Looks great, Sydney and Noah!  Todd helped as well.

One Bread, One Body” is an adult one-day, co-ed retreat, to be held October 3rd, 9am--3pm, at Camp Hardtner in Pollock, Louisiana.  The cost is $15 per person for materials, building usage, and lunch.  Due to space, the first 40 paid-in-full registrants will be accepted.  Questions, contact Maureen Dankert, 280-3247, to register contact Colleen LeBeouf, 781-1443.

Just to give you fair warning….LLS is planning a “fun run” in the very near future.  Please begin your preparation for this event now.  If you have not be exercising regularly, it might be a good idea to begin slowly – a walk in the evening after work and progressively work up to a short run and then increase your distance.  Full details will be forthcoming.

Todd Sauer is gearing up to begin working on the pews again.  We have 14 more to refinish.  Speak with Todd on Sunday if you would like to help with this project.

Elizabeth Dugdale has been appointed to fill a vacant seat on council until the Annual Meeting.  Elizabeth is responsible for Youth Ministries.
